Relay for Life

We got to the relay around 6 and saw a see of people. The event overall was very moving, the attendants seemed to be one big family. I met some amazing people.

The Luminary Lap begins with all the lights and music being turned off for a moment of silence followed by the sounds of bag pipes and drums playing. The band takes a lap followed closely by hundreds of people carrying candles. Only the sound of footsteps and tears can be hear in addition to the bag pipes. I accidentally fired my camera, but liked this image.

The is a Gwinnett County Police Officer.....Hysterical!! The Miss Relay is a competition where men dress in drag and parade around to raise money. It is very similar to a Miss America competition, only VERY different. After the competition the contestants are to walk around the fairgrounds and collect donations, they have 30 minutes. This was the Miss Relay Lap. Contestants raised 9,500 in that 30 minutes. The Gwinnett County Officer came in 2nd for the competition by raising 2,200. (in 30 min!!)

I loved the angel wings worn to honor family members that had died.

The luminaries honor survivors and people that have died. I met a mother that attended Relay with her son and husband. The dad was diagnosed with Stage 2 Lymphoma and the son wanted to go find his luminary with his son. Sadly, that image was too dark. I love this one......."Are you watching?"

100's of people were wearing signs to honor family and friends that have died from cancer.

Relay for Life is an annual fundraiser to find the cure for cancer. The Relay was held at the Gwinnett County Fairgrounds at they expected 50,ooo people to attend. The image above it the Purple Glove Dance. The dancers are cancer survivors and people with family members who are survivors.
